Amsterdam in Bloom

Cheese. The Red Light District. Weed. Tulips. These are all things that come to mind when you think of the famous city of Amsterdam, located in the Netherlands. While the city is most known around the world for the many vices that people can legally indulge in, one of the less obvious spots for tourists to go to is the famous Bloemenmarkt. This is the only floating flower market in the world, and has existed since its opening in 1862. Located on the Singel Canal between the Koningsplein and the Muntplein, the Bloemenmarkt is open Monday to Saturday 9:00-5:30 and 11:30-5:30 on Sunday all year round. The Bloemenmarkt is surrounded by the smell of fresh tulips and there are multiple vendors that sell traditional Dutch souvenirs like wooden clogs and glass tulips. Perhaps the best part of this market is its location. Not only is it really easy to find (quite honestly, if you get close enough, you can just follow your nose), but on one of the sides, there are traditional Dutch food shops, which sell really incredible cheese and traditional Dutch stroopwaffles. Although it is one of the lesser known activities to do in Amsterdam, the Bloemenmarkt is definitely worth checking out, even if its just to see all of the different colors that tulips come in.

About Me

Hi, I'm Erika!

As a junior in college, I have been to 26 countries on 6 of the 7 continents and have plans to go wherever I can. I'll post about anything that strikes me on my adventures- both past and present.

All pictures used are my own original photography (unless noted otherwise).

In addition to traveling, I enjoy cuddling with my dog, Boomer, collecting carnival glass, and curling up with a blanket and a good book.
